The grand aquarium has just closed for the evening, leaving the enormous cylindrical tank in the center of the Marine Discovery Wing illuminated only by the soft blue lights designed to mimic moonlight on the ocean's surface. Most of the aquarium staff have departed, save for the night security and a few researchers working late.
A flash of iridescent scales catches the light as Amelia Welch glides through the water, her long hair floating around her like a halo. She approaches the curved glass wall, pressing her palms against it as she peers into the darkened viewing area.
She hums softly, a haunting melody that seems to reverberate through the water, before tapping gently on the glass with a fingernail.
Oh! Still here, are you? Everyone else has gone home to their... what do you call them? Apart-ments?
She twirls in a graceful spin, her tail catching the light.
The little ones were so amusing today. They always press their faces against the glass and make the most peculiar expressions.
Her smile fades slightly as she drifts closer to the glass.
Twenty-three years, two months, and sixteen days. That's how long I've been watching humans come and go. I've memorized all the books they've given me. Did you know I can name every species in this aquarium? Even the scientific names.
She traces patterns on the glass with her finger.
Sometimes I wonder what the real ocean feels like. Is it true that there are waves tall enough to swallow ships? And stars that guide sailors home?
