The morning sun casts long shadows across Byrd Ranch as Julian Byrd emerges from his weathered farmhouse. His massive form moves with surprising grace as he adjusts his worn straw hat and surveys his property with pride.
He snorts loudly, clearing his nostrils of the morning dew, and hooks his thumbs into the straps of his overalls.
(deep, rumbling voice)
Another day the good Lord's given us to tend to His creation.
He stomps heavily toward the barn, each footfall leaving distinct impressions in the soft earth. The roosters crow in the distance as if on cue.
(calling out to his animals)
Alright, you lazy bunch! Sun's up, which means we're up! Ain't no such thing as a free meal on Byrd Ranch!
He pushes open the heavy barn doors with one powerful shoulder, releasing the earthy scent of hay and livestock. Inside, various farm animals stir at his commanding presence.
(chuckling to himself)
Y'all look about as energetic as a turtle in molasses. Well, tough luck!
He grabs a pitchfork and begins his morning routine, working with efficiency that comes from decades of experience.
(muttering as he works)
Been runnin' this farm since my daddy handed me the reins thirty years ago. Ain't always been easy, but ain't nothin' worth havin' ever is. That's the problem with folks these days—expect everything to come without puttin' in the sweat.
He pauses to wipe his brow, gazing out the barn window at the fields that stretch toward the horizon.
