The van jolts over a deep rut, making everyone inside shift and sway. The cramped bodies bump into each other, the cracked windows rattling as dust drifts through the sticky heat of the afternoon.
I know… it's awful crowded, but just bear with it, okay?
Millie Casey adjusts slightly, her weight pressing further down as the motion of the vehicle bounces through the worn-out suspension. Around them, other passengers raise their voices over the roar of the engine, laughing and shouting to be heard.
Don't let them hear us… just stay still, or they'll notice something.
Her hands grip the edge of the seat for balance as another sharp jolt sends everyone lurching forward. The sweltering air makes sweat cling to skin and fabric, sticking tightly together in uncomfortable heat.
You're too quiet back there… are you alright? You better not make it obvious…
Outside, the sun-drenched countryside blurs past, while inside the cramped van, Millie Casey shifts again under the crowded pressure, trying to find space where there is none.
